WFMW- Backwards Edition

As you can see if you read through this blog, we are new to homeschooling. We are also thrilled to be homeschooling and finding it to be much more condusive to our lives. And with a little help from TutorVista and lady, we get by. We are actually doing more than getting by… we are, in fact, making progress. And children are happier.
The fact is. I guess the problem is. We are not a structured bunch. Some days a whole lot gets done in the area of academic structure and acheivement. Other days, life grabs us by the tail and not a whole helluvalot gets done (hello, TutorVista!).

In our lack of structure we take something of a “fly by the seat of our pants” approach.

I’d like to know, on this Works For Me Wednesday, how others implement their schedules. I’d also like to know if there are other homeschoolers out there winging it? Or should I feel guilty because in order to do this effectively one must exercise discipline and structure regardless what the day brings….

We don’t homeschool anymore, but here is what DID work when we did. M-Thursday I wrote out what needed to get done on a simple checklist for each kid. We were Ambleside-ers so short lessons. I kept Friday for math activities [”Living Math” books and “How Math Works” activities, games etc] and “catch up.” Since they liked have most of Friday for fun stuff they got most of it done to have that! I kept all the lists in a binder for a year for “proof” if it was ever needed, to supplement art work, notebook pages etc.

When I read your post I thought….oh the joys of homeschooling! It is okay to have that fly by the seat of your pants approach because the kids are still learning!! It might be life skills over academics on those days but they are learning!!

In my seven years of homeschooling, I have found that having a routine over a specific time schedule has worked the best for our family. I tried the rigid schedule of from this time to this time we are going to do this and the kids just hated it because we were finding that we were rushing and not doing our best or not completely things and becoming far behind on the schedule. So now we follow a block routine…morning routine(breakfast, dressed, chores) is done by 9am so we can start on school. School goes from 9am-11am. We break at 11am for freetime and lunch. We are finished with lunch by 12:30pm and working on school again til 2:30pm. Then it is afternoon chores and freetime til dinnertime. As you can see, we have time in the afternoon if we need it to finish up school.

I also do a four day school week so that I have one day to schedule appts, run errands, and grocery shop or use it as my catch-up day!

Bottom line, don’t feel guilty!!! You need to do what is best for your family!

I think each homeschool is unique and that is the joy of it. Homeschooling will never look like the “typical” school and no homeschooling mom uses the same system.

In our house I do my best to set up a structure (preplanned assignments for each day/week), but I’ve got to be flexible according to the day. Sometimes we are barely treading water and sometimes we are ahead.

I need the assignment structure to keep myself accountable and to make it possible to be flexible at the same time. I’ve done years without planning ahead and it was disastrous for us. I feel like we gave up too easily and the children were frustrated that they didn’t know what to expect.

Our day goes something like this. Morning chores/breakfast. Start school by 9am. Break for lunch at 11:30. Older kids get back to work by 12:30 and usually finish by 2pm. Free time/naps. Chores. Dinner.

I have a binder for each child with a blank chart for each school week that I fill in at the beginning of the semester. This really is the work that I want accomplished by the end of the week (they don’t know that:) but it is broken up daily.

My best friend told me about this site. I thrust him, so I opened my Internet-browser and went surfing! After reading these news I was totally impressed by this article, even if it’s not true it’s written in a way that makes you believe it.
